Horror Stories from Landlords(Quotes Kept Anonymous)
-
Thank you in Michie for suing the governor who did not think about mom and pa landlord. I am suffering to keep my 2 unit house which I live in one and rent the other one. My tenant misuse the situation and said I am not going to pay any rent because government said that. I am in risk loosing the house.
-I rented my home after moving in to a bigger home as my family grew. You can call me an accidental landlord, but I took pride in my ability to provide housing to fellow citizens. Until Nov 2019 came, and tenant decided to stop rent payments. After trying to reason that it is not in their best interest, I had to unwillingly start eviction proceedings. After notice period, eviction papers were filed with Alameda county court just 2 weeks prior to COVID19, and everything went south from there. Now my tenant does not even take my calls. It is almost like they were given a free rein by the government to abscond from their rent paying obligation. It is unbelievable to see this happen in a land that promises rule of law. I am glad to have run into group that is championing the cause of folks like me. It is real that some tenants are taking undue advantage of the moratorium, and my situation is an example of just that.
-This Judicial order has created a perverse incentive for our tenant, who is unaffected by covid-19, to live rent free on our property, all while subletting and collecting rent from occupants not on the lease. This order has stripped us of any remedy. In our specific situation, we filed a 90 day notice to terminate our nuisance tenant's lease PRIOR to the emergency declaration. Now, because lease termination date fell within the Judicial council's order they refuse to leave. They are not affected by covid -19 and make no claim to be. They have not paid rent since March. Over the course of their tenancy we suspect the use of illicit drugs. The home is now overrun with people coming and going all hours of the day. We lawfully terminated their lease. Now, because of the Judicial council's order; we are forced to live next door to these people for an unknown amount of time, without payment, while we struggle to make the mortgage payment. We are ma and pa landlords who have full-time day jobs. I can't even play in my own yard with my 5 year old because of the chaotic environment the tenant's unauthorized occupants create.
-I gave my tenants notice on March 1, pre- COVID. No rent, no communication, and are preparing food out of my property to sell. Big health violation and still they are protected. They work under the table and refuse to communicate with me as I try to sell my house. My parents brought us to the US to have a better life and because they were tired of the corrupt government. The taking of our personal property by the government...I guess we didn't escape far enough.
-Elderly property owner wants to move back into her family home with daughter. Tenant refuses to leave, despite having been given a proper 60 day notice/no fault, which has expired. But, due to blanket eviction ban, owner has had to put her life on hold till she can evict. Tenant is taking advantage of COVID19 eviction ban meant to help those affected, to guarantee her own agenda. Tenant has let the property run down, there is trash all over & there are new persons not on lease that tenant has allowed to move in. Tenant makes threats to owner, and daughter and refuses to comply with contractual obligations. Tenant has changed locks, refused owner entry, & has prevented workers from performing needed repairs/improvements on home.
-II have been trying to evict a tenant since January 29, 2020, BEFORE the pandemic!! Because of the Governor's orders it has stopped it! The courthouse clerks are telling me that even after the order is lifted, I won't be able to file anything for 60-90 days. It is not fair that tenants can stay for a year rent free and expect the landlords to be able to sustain the mortgage and other expenses that comes alo f with owning a rental.
-I live in XXXX ca how can i evict a tenant from my house. how can i stop governor from not let me evict someone from my house.( the governor owns my house?) not do to non pay but he subleased to someone without my knowing.
-II have a tenant living in my XXXX property who has not paid any rent since January, long before any Covid 19. I think the the state of California is at fault for my situation since I cannot evict her.
-I rent out a bedroom in my mobile home just so I can have grocery and gas money. I havent been paid rent for 6 months (hence my interest). I go in the hole every month even when I do get rent. I get social security
-My tenants stopped paying rent mid-February, and as of March 17th, notified me that they would be staying in my home beyond the
lease through the pandemic, despite my protests. They have not attempted to pay any rent, nor even communicated their inability to do so.
- Four months, no rent, lame covid excuses, no law!
-I leased my house last year for one year. The lease ended May 10 2020. I refused to give an extension. The lessee refuses to vacate. No sublease was allowed. He now made it in a hotel. He only occupies a few rooms and rents out the rest of the house, including 6 people in the garage. He pays me nothing. He probably collects 1800 usd in rent each month. He just got a new car; an Audi for himself, and a bmw for his daughter. He refuses to let me inspect the house. He turned off the water to the landscaping, letting it die to save money. I offered him 5000 usd to get out; just to get him out (he already has no right to be there, no lease). With his legal help person he lets me know he wants 70000 and he will be out next week. I said he is crazy, his legal help tells me no he is not because the way the government is he can probably stay in there for a year and he has a lot of income from the property. UNBELIEVABLE. Court does not accept unlawful detainer action except for public health and danger. With 6 people in the garage that seems a health issue. The court is supposed to hear if they can given an exception for such case. The court refuses to schedule even for that. Ventura County
